Debut album from the Bristol based five piece
The Minke Whales are a folk five-piece based in Bristol. Formed in 2009 by Edinburgh singer songwriter and guitarist Stuart Reid (formerly of Shifty Disco Records band,Seagull Strange).
The whisperers locally suggest songs that blend a soupçon of twisted folk; Arcade Fire mixed with a healthy dollop of Mazzy Starr that, with Reid’s grizzled and endearing Scottish vocal gruff combined with co singer Elle Ashwell”s english nightingale, gives them a refreshing and honest vocal soundscape you immediately want to hear again. All this wrapped up in sweet melodies, dark lyrics and banjo laden stomping stompingness that when live and loud they seem to have recklessly formed the habit of encouraging even the most wisened gig scrooge to throw caution and beer to the wind and behave like they were at a village hoedown.
The Minke Whales are:
Stuart Reid – Vocals and Guitar Elle Ashwell – Vocals Neil Hughes – Bass Guitar, Vocals and Glockenspiel Tim Moore – Banjo, Vocals and Electric Guitar Chris Mapp – Drums“Ragged, literate, highly musical folk for raising barns to – and then raising the roofs of said barns… Reliable, festival-flavoured knees-uppage.”
